Portland, OR Lighting Demo

January 23, 2013

I’ve been photographing a lot of headshots lately, and wanted to brush up on some of my indoor lighting and positioning techniques.  The first person that came to mind that truly has mastered lighting inside and out is Craig Mitchelldyer, of Mitchelldyer Photography from Portland, OR.  If you’ve never heard of him or seen his work, It’s plastered on billboards and sports papers throughout Portland.  He’s known for shooting the Portland Trailblazers and Timbers games along with specializing in corporate headshots and weddings.

In the first group of photos below,  I had a main external light surrounded by a softbox to her right.  A white board reflecting light on her left and another external back light pointing towards the backdrop.  The left one is a little too bright for me.  I’m pretty happy with the middle one.  The gray backdrop on the right almost washes her out a bit.  Shot with my 50mm 1.4 at 2.0 – 1/100 ISO 400.

The next series of shots we were just playing around.  On the far left, we pointed the back light towards our subject to give her more of a halo outline which I thought was cool.  The middle one, well…kind of explains itself, Jordan and I being silly.  The far right lighting is the same as top, just a cuter pose!  Shot with my 70-200mm 2.8 at 2.8 – 1/100 ISO 640.

The last photo I couldn’t resist posting! Sorry Craig, but I got a kick out of your daughters sassy-ness here!

Family Portrait Session – Gresham, OR

January 4, 2013

It’s been a couple months since my last blog post, so nothing like starting the New Year off right with another one!  Last summer, I got to photograph my dear friend, Michelle and her step daughter, Ashley, with their horses.  So when Michelle asked me to capture the whole family, I was super excited!  I wanted to share a few of my favorites from the other day.
